Marnus Labuschagne Left Out from Australian One-Day International Team Versus India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, as high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a surprise call-up.
Recent Form Lead to Exclusion
The right-hander was left out from the one-day international side after scoring just one run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a best innings of forty-seven in his previous ten ODI innings.
The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates
Labuschagne has shown signs of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw made a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a return to the Test team as Australia seek a fix to their batting top-order problems.
Pace Additions and Injury Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since excelling for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after being concussed in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he works to regain fitness from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Approach and Schedule
Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
